For Deniece Williams’ sixth Columbia Records release, “I’m So Proud”, she formed an alliance with jazz giant, producer/keyboardist/songwriter/arranger extraordinaire, George Duke, that would later prove to be an Award winning combination. Originally released in 1983, Niecy, as she’s affectionately known, continued her brand of smooth classic soul, soothing ballads, Gospel, a hint of Reggae, and just all around feel good music. In addition to having George Duke on board as a producer and performer, some of the finest west coast musicians appear on the album to give this recording the highest fidelity quality possible. Fueled by the uplifting and danceable first single, “Do What You Feel”, which peaked at No. 9 on Billboard’s Top Hot Black Singles chart, and No. 109 on Billboard’s Top Pop Singles chart, as they were called during that time, this album was well accepted and adored by her legions fans around the world. Three songs co produced by Bill Neale and Niecy, and one selection solely produced by Deniece, rounds out an album that elevated her 5 octave singing prowess to another level, in her already legendary career. Let’s take another look at some of the gems that made up one of Niecy’s greatest projects to date.
