If you're not familiar with Leroy Burgess' final Black Ivory albums where the New York trio ventured from the love ballads that made them a cult item, you won't recognize him with the Aleem Brothers on this or their first Atlantic LP. If you're looking for the searing falsetto-singing Burgess, look elsewhere. With Tunde-Ra and Taharqa Aleem, Burgess serves up another platter of electric soul that's far less compelling than their Atlantic debut. "Love Shock" is true Aleem and "Searchin'" is interesting, but the rest merely redo, to a lesser degree, what made them an underground interest. This was the Aleems final album as artists, though they still run a recording company in the Big Apple and produce others.
Comprised of two brothers who can trace their music business roots back to the late-'60s Greenwich Village scene (where they shared an apartment with Jimi Hendrix), the Aleems are most noted for forming Nia Records in the early '80s. The label became home to such notable rappers as Marley Marl and MC Shan and helped develop the careers of MCs such as Sparky D. After Nia folded, the Aleems recorded an album for Atlantic Records, Casually Formal, before opening up their own recording studio in the late '80s.
