“Electric Jazz” fans already know Michael Henderson was the first “true” funk musician and his debut album is the superior 1976 ‘Solid’ album. His singing voice, an impassioned instrument, shines throughout the album particularly on songs with complex vocal dynamics and harmonic structures, such as “Treat Me Like A Man” and “Stay With Me This Summer”.
Solid really pushes the limits of romantically swelling those melodic and vocal flavours.
“Be My Girl” peaked just outside the top twenty on the US R&B charts, as “Solid” became a massive debut album by charting in the Top 20 on the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart and peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums.
The album most definitely lives up to its title, this is “Solid”.
